Empson USA in Italy
We landed in Italy yesterday and are tasting at Conterno Fantino and Marcarini today. The 2011 Dolcettos and Barberas are truly well balanced and delicious. The 2009 Barolos are generous and forward drinking. A great showing of wines so far. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
South Beach Wine and Food Festival 2012
This past weekend Foodies and Wine Lovers alike poured into South Beach, Florida to take part in the 11th annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival presented by the Food Network and Food & Wine. The Empson Producers participating in the festival kicked off the weekend on Thursday night with a Welcome Dinner at Sardinia Restaurant. Sardinia Restaurant & Entoeca is known as one of the most authentic and exciting restaurants in Miami and has been awarded “Best Restaurant in South Beach” by the Miami New Times. A great way to begin a weekend celebrating the best of the best in the food and wine world! On Friday evening, hundreds of people gathered for one of the most coveted of events at the festival; Wine Spectator’s Best of the Best Tasting at the Fontainbeau Resort. This event features some of the best new chefs in the country and challenges them to pair there dishes with top scoring wines for a celebration of mouthwatering luxury. Among those participating in the event were Matteo Sardagna from Luigi Einaudi Winery, Stefano Maggini from Orma, and Michele Jermann from Jermann Winery. Stefano presented a vertical Orma with wines from the 2006, 2007, and 2008 vintage, while Jermann featured various vintages of their cult classics; Dreams & Vintage Tunina. Einaudi chose to show their entire Barolo offering; starting with the Barolo Terlo and finishing with the Barolo “Costa Grimaldi” and Barolo “Cannubi”, their single vineyard Barolos. Once the tasting doors opened people began pouring in as the event was sold as it has done for many years. The atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation as trade and consumers alike stepped up to the tasting tables. Orma, Jermann and Einaudi were immensely popular among the tasters, so much so that there was nothing left at the end of the event except empty bottles. Events continued throughout the weekend including seminars, tastings, and dinners. Visitors had a chance to learn about everything from wine and cheese pairings to glass selection based on wine types to the intricacies of American Cabernet vs. Italian Cabernet. They were also given a second opportunity to taste additional Jermann wines at the Italian Pavilion during the Grand Tastings on Saturday & Sunday. Jermann’s Pinot Noir, Red Angel on the Moonlight, and Sauvignon were well received and a refreshing delight in the heat of South Beach. By the end of the weekend, both consumers and members of the Trade were happy with the chance to come together and enjoy good food, good wine, and good conversation.
Canella at the Mohegan Sun WineFest 2012
We want to extend our appreciation to the lovely ladies of Canella, Nicoletta and Alessandra who participated in the Mohegan Sun WineFest 2012 this past weekend. The Sun WineFest was a fun & exciting event that gave Nicoletta and Alessandra the opportunity to share their bubbles with consumers. The women commented on the event; “We were able to speak directly with consumers who were extremely interested in learning about quality Italian wines and the Bellini Cocktail, Blood Orange Mimosa & Prosecco. The best part was that after awhile, people were approaching our table saying “I was told to come and try your Blood Orange Mimosa and Bellini Cocktail because they are so delicious!” Customers were so pleased to learn that these products contain no added sugar and no preservatives. Many said that they drink Prosecco often and that Canella Prosecco is the best Prosecco they’ve ever had.” Both Nicoletta and Alessandra were very impressed with the attendees’ curiosity and willingness to try new products and share their excitement and knowledge with others. In fact, their table was so popular that they ran out of wine & cocktails before the end of the show! Canella hopes to make their participation in this wonderful festival an annual event.
Happy New Year 2012
We are confident and elated with the prospects of this 2012 year already in action with a full moon and bright sun. The short note is "a little bit of suffering makes one stronger" and I have to believe that we are. After all we do have a great portfolio of fine wine and fine people who make sure all of the above comes true. Warmly, Neil & Maria Empson
A Vinitaly to Remember!
THIS WAS OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY FOR EMPSON AND WE NOTICED A GREAT INTEREST IN MANY OF THE WINE GEMS OF ITALY BEYOND THE KNOWN REGIONS; RESTAURANTEURS ARE VERY INTERESTED IN PAIRING MANY OF THEIR DISHES WITH WINES THAT OFFER REGIONAL COMPATABILITY. WE WERE ALSO GREATLY IMPRESSED BY THE QUALITY AND NUMBER OF ATTENDEES COMPARED TO THE PAST FEW YEARS. THIS IS VERY PROMISING FOR THE FUTURE OF THE FINE WINE BUSINESS. THE 2010 VINTAGE WAS A DELIGHT WITH PRIMARY FLAVORS SHOWING GREAT CLASS AND FINESSE. THE QUALITY OF OUR NEW RELEASES ALSO IS PROOF THAT THE WINE BUSINESS IS A MODEL OF CONTINUING IMPROVEMENT AND DISTINCTION WHICH SURELY WILL HAVE BROAD CONSUMER INTEREST.
